What is Alginate?

Alginate is a substance derived from brown seaweed. It can absorb a lot of water and forms a gel-like mass. For this reason, alginate has long been used in products designed to care for or protect the skin.

When alginate is mixed with water, it forms a soft, elastic gel that adapts well to different shapes. It can absorb a large amount of fluid, creating a pleasantly moist environment on the skin.

I have allergies and sensitive skin, is an Alginate baseplate safe to use?

Alginate has been used in wound care for over 50 years. Found in brown seaweed, it is safe for use on most skin types and has been proven to actively help sore skin. However, it should not be used if you have a known allergy to seaweed. If you are concerned about trying a new product or accessory, try a patch test. To conduct a patch test, apply the product on a small area of skin on your upper/inner arm or inner thigh for 24 hours to see if your skin reacts. If it reacts, do not use the product.

If my skin is sore and damaged, can I continue to use stoma accessories with the Alginate pouch?

When using Alginate, you should not need any other accessories. Simply apply the Alginate baseplate directly onto your skin after washing and drying the area, allowing the Alginate to have direct contact with your skin to soothe and heal the sore area.

How long does the Alginate pouch take to work?

Many people find the Alginate pouch soothing on their sore skin within the first few minutes of wearing it. You should notice during the first 12-24 hours that it feels more comfortable than your previous pouch. After 48 hours of use, you should notice some improvement to your skin.

How do I remove the Alginate pouch?

As with other stoma pouches, gently lift the corner of the baseplate and apply some adhesive remover spray, before slowly peeling back the baseplate until it has released.

How long can I wear an Alginate pouch for?

Where possible, try to leave the pouch in place for a minimum of 24 hours, so it has time to soothe and heal your skin – but it is often beneficial to your skin to leave the pouch in place for 48 hours before changing it again. The Alginate baseplate is highly absorbent but can maintain a moist environment which promotes healing and the formation of granulation tissue.

Can I continue to use the Alginate pouch after my skin has healed?

Yes, the Alginate pouch may be used on a long-term basis to prevent any further skin damage.

I am currently having chemotherapy, is the Alginate pouch safe to use?

Absolutely. During your chemotherapy treatment, your stool output may become looser; but since alginate is more absorbent, it will help protect and soothe your skin from any potential leaks
